Wales targets hepatitis with £1.4m

Welsh flag Thousands of people in Wales who are unknowingly living with hepatitis are to be identified by a new NHS drive against blood borne infections.

Health Minister Edwina Hart has pledged £1.37m to identify at-risk groups and improve the care for people living with hepatitis B and C. The plan has been developed by Public Health Wales, an NHS trust.

It is thought between 12,000 and 14,000 people in Wales are infected with hepatitis C, but the majority are unaware of their infection.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which in most cases is caused by a virus, with the three common viruses being hepatitis A, B and C. The risk of catching hepatitis B and C increases if people are involved in high-risk behaviours such as injecting drugs or having unprotected sex.
