ABPI Code complaints down in 2009

The Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA) received 92 complaints about transgressions of the ABPI Code of practice in 2009, down from 112 in 2008. This resulted in the PMCPA dealing with 85 cases.

However, the number of individual allegations within the cases was 455; 175 more than the year before.

The largest number of complaints in 2009 came from health professionals.

There was an increase in the number of matters appealed last year, rising to 67 from 32 in 2008; and 44 matters were successfully appealed in 2009, compared to just nine in the previous year.

The proportion of rulings by the ABPI Code of practice panel that were successfully appealed rose last year to 10 per cent, or 44 out of 455, compared to 3 per cent in 2008.

Pharmaceutical companies brought 29 per cent of the complaints last year (24 out of the 92).
