Nuffield Trust rates virtual ward programme

Research and policy body the Nuffield Trust is evaluating a programme of 'virtual wards' that has been set up in Croydon, Devon and Wandsworth.

The programme is being assessed to discover if it helps prevent unplanned hospital admissions.

Wards are organised on the same basis as those in hospitals, using the same systems, routines and staffing, but the patients stay in their own homes.

Virtual ward teams meet each day, use the same notes and have a ward clerk that acts as an administrator.

Results of the evaluation, covering costs and effects on health and social care services will be reported in November 2011. They will be used to help councils and the NHS decide whether to fund virtual wards and how best to run them.
