The National Audit Office report Hip replacements: an update raises several issues relating to commercial sponsorship, in particular the acceptance of funding and incentives from outside bodies by NHS staff. The following is a comment from a chief executive’s email bulletin:

‘The Department’s guidance, Commercial sponsorship: ethical standards for the NHS was issued to assist in maintaining strict ethical standards in the conduct of NHS business. The guidance, which should be drawn to the attention of all staff, clearly sets out the responsibilities of both NHS employers and staff to fully monitor, record and approve sponsorship within NHS organisations.’
