The National
Audit Office report Hip
replacements: an update raises several issues relating
to commercial sponsorship, in particular the acceptance of funding
and incentives from outside bodies by NHS staff. The following is
a comment from a chief executive’s email bulletin:
‘The Department’s
guidance, Commercial sponsorship: ethical standards for the
NHS was issued to assist in maintaining strict ethical standards
in the conduct of NHS business. The guidance, which should be drawn
to the attention of all staff, clearly sets out the responsibilities
of both NHS employers and staff to fully monitor, record and approve
sponsorship within NHS organisations.’
