Is the chief executive a customer?

Unlike the pattern developing with PCTs, NHS trust chief executives tend not to be ‘customer managed’ in the same way — if at all — by local NHS specialists. This may be for the very good reason of prioritising NHS customers to PCTs.

Local NHS influencers will need to assess whether or not chief executives should be considered within wider, local health economy account plans (ie, combined primary and secondary care). Government guidance regarding NHS/industry partnership arrangements does suggest that such arrangements may need board approval.
